Area code lookup
An area code tells you the region a number was issued in and, just as important, what time it is there. Calling a 907 number at 9am Eastern means 5am in Anchorage. This table covers every US state, the major Canadian metros and the toll-free codes, and it is instant because it does not need a carrier query.
Keep in mind that mobile numbers travel with their owners. An area code is where the number came from, not where the phone is today. For the current carrier and the exact rate center of a specific number, use the full phone number lookup.
What you get back
City or region. The metro area or region the code serves. Overlay codes list the same region as their parent.
State or province. Including DC and the Canadian provinces.
Timezone. The IANA timezone, which is what you need for call scheduling and send-time logic.
Toll-free detection. 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are identified so you can treat them differently.
How to use it
- Enter the three-digit code, or paste a whole number and we take the code from it.
- Press Look up.
- Use the timezone to plan the call. Use the full phone lookup if you need the current carrier or line type.
Who uses this
Dialer and SDR teams. Calling windows by timezone are a compliance requirement under the TCPA and a courtesy everywhere else.
Local businesses. Knowing that a lead's number is from two states away changes how you qualify it.
Developers. The API returns the same data for building timezone-aware scheduling without a full carrier lookup.

Why does the code show a different city than where the caller lives?
Numbers move with people. The area code is where the number was issued. For where a mobile number is today, no lookup can tell you; for the rate center of record, use the phone number lookup.
What is an overlay code?
A second code added to the same region when the first ran out of numbers. 312, 773 and 872 all serve Chicago. We list them with the same city.
Are there area codes missing?
We cover every state, the toll-free codes and the large Canadian metros. Newer overlay codes are added as they are assigned. If one is missing, tell us.
Does this cost a credit on the API?
No. Area code lookups are free on every plan because they do not touch the carrier network.
